Jerusalem - An Israeli parliamentary deputy said yesterday that a future US-brokered Israeli-Palestinian peace deal could include the release of Jonathan Pollard, an American Jew jailed for life in the US for spying for Israel.

Mr Ophir Pines, a Labour member who heads a parliamentary support group for Pollard, said he was not surprised by a report in the daily Yedioth Ahronoth that the US and Israeli leaders agreed this week to clear the way for his release.

Pollard, a former US naval intelligence officer, was caught passing to Israel information on Arab countries he said the US had withheld from its ally.
