SEVERAL HOUSES in the Captain's Road area of Crumlin in west Dublin were evacuated in the early hours of yesterday following the discovery of an explosive device attached to a parked car.
Gardaí received an anonymous 999 emergency call shortly after midnight reporting that someone was seen interfering with the underside of a car parked in a driveway of a house on Captain's Road.
Within minutes, a second call was received from another witness giving similar details.
Gardaí attended the scene and discovered what appeared to be a suspicious device attached to the underside of the car.
An Army bomb disposal team was called to the scene and confirmed that the device was an improvised "pipe bomb" and evacuated all houses in the surrounding area.
The device was dismantled at the scene and the "all clear" was given at about 3am allowing people to return to their houses.
The device was being examined last night in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, by Army explosives ordinance disposal officers.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with the find, but gardaí have launched an investigation into the incident.
It is not known if the incident is linked to the ongoing drugs feud in the Crumlin/Drimnagh area.
Pipe bombs, guns and drugs were seized in raids in Finglas in north Dublin earlier this year.
The Army bomb disposal unit was called in on January 19th following the discovery by gardaí from the local drugs unit of the devices at house in Barry Park, Finglas.
There has been no suggestion that that incident is linked to the discovery of the device in Crumlin yesterday.
