Socialist deputy Joe Higgins was no sooner selected, from a hat, to serve on the Leinster House Joint Services Committee - looking after the Dail restaurants and bars - than he resigned from the position.
There were worries among the "inmates" that they would be put on hardship rations post haste, but he was gone before the new committee got off the ground. He had, he said, more important people to be looking after than TDs.
