A HEROIN addict has been jailed for a total of 10 years after he pleaded guilty to three offences including false imprisonment of a woman, robbery and attempted robbery over a 10 month period in Cork.

William Kenny (32), originally from Colmcille Road in Gurranebraher in Cork, was given a six year sentence by Judge Patrick Moran at Cork Circuit Criminal Court for falsely imprisoning a woman at the National Association Ovulation Method Ireland offices in Cork.

Det Darragh Murray told the court how Kenny had entered the upstairs premises on Patrick Street on April 3rd, 2007, and tied up a female staff member in her 40s using telephone cable. She was bound for more than 10 minutes and he threatened her before making off with €400.

Det Maurice Hickey told the court how Kenny held up a staff member at St Martin's Stores, Glen Heights Road in Ballyvolane on January 17th, 2008, and made off with several thousand euro in cash which was recovered by gardaí who arrested Kenny.

Det Sgt Denis Cahill said Kenny was on bail for that offence when he tried to rob Gurranebraher Post Office on February 18th, 2008, only to be confronted by a female staff member who grappled with him and he fled.

Judge Moran said Kenny, who had a number of previous convictions, had subjected three people to terrifying ordeals as he jailed him for six years for the false imprisonment and four years concurrent for the robbery and four years consecutive for the attempted robbery.
