A man killed when his car struck a ditch on the outskirts of Limerick city on Thursday night was named yesterday as Mr Des Moore (42), from Corbally, Limerick.

The accident occurred on the Redgate road at Mayorstone shortly before 9 p.m.

Gardai have also named the elderly woman who died after being hit by a car in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, on Thursday. She was Ms Elizabeth Ryan (78), from Ormond Street, Nenagh. The incident occurred in Summerhill, Nenagh, at around 7 p.m.

The deaths marked the end of another week of tragedy on Irish roads. Earlier on Thursday Ms Sally Shannon (17), from Coolkishla, near Macroom, Co Cork, died when the jeep she was driving went out of control.

Three young women and a two-year-old infant were killed on Wednesday when their car collided with an oncoming vehicle at Cooleen, near Charleville, Co Cork. They were named as Ms Niamh (20) and Ms Anita Herlihy (18), Ms Carmel Conroy (22) and her infant daughter, Emma.

The accident is believed to have occurred as they attempted to overtake another car on the outskirts of Charleville.

On Bank Holiday Monday, a Navan man, Mr Liam McLoughlin (46), died in a collision between a car and a tractor at Garlowcross, Navan. On the same day, Mr Thomas Keady (32), from Athenry, was killed when his jeep overturned on the Craughwell-Athenry road. Last Sunday, Ms Ciara Fox (19), from Woodlawn Grove, Waterford city, died when the car in which she was a passenger collided with a vehicle at Prumpelstown on the Carlow-Castledermot road.
