Heavy rain caused further flooding today in many parts and motorists were tonight urged to avoid certain routes and exercise extreme caution.
One of the worst hit areas was Tipperary where several roads, including a bridge in Ballynunty, were impassable.
There was also flooding in Killenaule and also between Fethard and Cashel.
The N7 Dublin to Limerick Road at Roscrea also remained impassable for a time on the Dublin side causing major delays.
There was flooding on the N7 on the Portlaoise side of Mountrath where the road was closed for several hours.
Several sections of the N11 around the Wicklow town of Arklow also became impassable because of serious flooding.
In Meath, there was severe flooding reported on the Edenderry to Kinnegad Road and the Trim to Dublin Road.
In Kildare, there was also flooding around the Kildare area-including the Milltown, Newbridge, Curragh, Mellitta Roads.
The Cadamstown to Kinnitty Road in Offaly was impassable and gardai were forced to divert traffic. There was also flooding along the Drumshambo to Dowra Road in Leitrim.
Gardaí tonight warned motorists to drive with extreme caution while AA Roadwatch advised motorists to expect “very wet road conditions”.
Earlier today Met Eireann issued a severe weather warning, forecasting that the rain would cause local flooding and that there may be thunderstorms in some areas.
The State forecaster said a series of rainbelts was expected to move in from the Atlantic throughout today and tomorrow with rainfall expected to be more widespread than last weekend's downpour.
In Dublin, the four local authorities have spent recent days vacuuming drains and stockpiling sandbags, while plans have been put in place to use the city’s traffic control centre as a co-ordination room for emergency services including the fire brigade, ambulance, civil defence and Garda Síochána.
The flood warning from Met Éireann came as households in north and west Dublin and parts of the midlands and the south were still clearing up from last week’s downpour.
Met Éireann said the worst affected areas were expected to be Leinster and Ulster, with the worst of the heavy rain expected last night or today.
Up to 60 mm of rain could fall in north Leinster and Ulster, while 45 to 60mm could be expected in mid-Leinster and less in Connacht. Met Éireann said recent rainfall had already resulted in a high water table and flooding was likely.
