Main causes of stress
While it does have its stressful moments, I love my work. I'm in the mobile phone business for 13 or 14 years and chief executive of Eircell for five years. Building up a business, providing employment and seeing young people make progress is great fun. I don't see it as stressful.
I get stressed over things I can't do anything about. Examples would be when I see so many people not as fortunate as you or I, or when I see people treating others badly.
I suppose growing old gets to me. I'm not one of those people who believe that schooldays are the best days of your life, but there are so many more things I want to do.
Coping with stress
The mobile phone is a great help in reducing stress because it keeps you in touch. Of course I would have to say that, but it's true. If you are running late, sending a text message is all you need to do to take away the stress.
I suppose I've been on a plane every week for the past 10 years, so I've learned to cope with travel. I always bring a good book with me when I'm travelling. I would read three or four paperbacks a week and the equivalent of War and Peace in emails, so I am used to speedreading.
One way to live longer
My advice is to be happy, harmonious and smile. I've often had to defuse situations in airport terminals when I see people losing control and bullying the Aer Lingus people who are only trying to do their job. If it has snowed, you can't change the fact and there's no point in blaming someone. If you want to live a long and happy life - and I do - getting stressed will not help.
