PAIN THERAPY: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (Tens) is emerging as a first-line alternative therapy to medication for many pain conditions, according to a new review of research.
The Irish Tens Advisory group reviewed research findings over the past 15 years and concluded that the positive effects of Tens includes pain reduction, decreased medication use and improved mobility for those suffering from back pain.
Tens therapy is widely used in hospitals and clinics, particularly during labour but also as a treatment for conditions such as osteoarthritis. It works by sending comfortable electrical pulses to the nerves, suppressing the pain signals to the brain while at the same time releasing endorphins, the body's natural pain relieving chemicals.
