Breege McMunn says life would not be worth living if she did not know that a bus would stop at her door every week and bring her to town in the company of her friends.
Eighty-five-year-old Breege is a widow who lives alone. She lost her sight eight years ago.
“The bus is wonderful,” she says. “I could not get up on an ordinary bus because of my sight.”
Breege used to drive and cycle, but her only mode of transport now is the bus provided by the Rural Transport Programme.
She says she looks forward to the weekly trip from her home in west Sligo into Sligo town where she does her shopping and meets up with friends.
“Life would not be worth living if they took it away. It makes me get up in the morning. Otherwise, I would stay in bed half the day.”
Because the bus picks her up at her door and drops her home again, she says she feels very safe.
“It’s lovely to get out and chat to people and be able to get shopping done. We stick to the same part of Sligo , so I know it well and can get everything done there.”
