EATING breakfast half an hour before exams helps children achieve higher scores, according to the October issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Israeli researchers, who studied 569 boys and girls aged 11 to 13 from various socio economic backgrounds, found that eating breakfast two hours before an exam did not appear to improve children's cognitive functions. However, there was a significant improvement when children were given sugared cornflakes and milk at school half an hour before the exam. In addition, primary school students in disadvantaged areas of the US have shown notable academic improvement since the School Breakfast Programme was created by the US Congress in 1966.
