Cathal Murray presents the RTÉ Radio 1 show, The Weekend on One
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
Yes, when it comes to exercise, so-so when it comes to diet. I do stand-up comedy as well as my radio work, so life is a bit hectic at the moment – fun though. Once I’ve had a good night’s sleep, I’m ready for anything.
How often do you exercise?
I ran my first marathon in Barcelona earlier this year – a great experience, though I’m not sure I want to go through it again. I try to exercise about three to four times a week, dividing it between running and squash. It’s a great game, a kind of gladiatorial combat. I can be competitive and sometimes come out with language that would make a squash-playing docker blush.
Do you get your five a day?
No. My diet has always been a problem. I was a fussy eater as a child. Despite my mum’s best efforts, I just wouldn’t go for what was good for me. I didn’t eat vegetables until my late teens and I still don’t eat fruit. I’m trying to improve. I’m slim, but that’s because I’m careful not to overeat and make sure to exercise when I can.
Do you worry?
Yes. Who can truly say they don’t?
I used to have my own laboratory where I would invent worries. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised that it’s better to let go of the things you’ve no control over. Doing stand-up comedy brings its own stresses. I must be addicted.
What do you do to relax?
I enjoy listening to music and reading, and nothing beats a good run to clear out the cobwebs. My favourite way to relax is to go for a swim in the sea, floating on your back with your ears under the water and staring at the sky, dangerous but relaxing.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
My body clock is a bit cuckoo! I alternate between getting up very early and very late – I’d like to regulate that. Also, I don’t cook as much as I should and never seem to be eating at the same time every day.
