John Giles, former Irish soccer international, founder of the John Giles Foundation
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
Yes, I think so. I’ve always paid attention to my health, without being too severe about it. I played football until I was 40 so that gives you a good start anyway.
How often do you exercise?
Golf is my main exercise now. I do a few tummy exercises just to keep that area in check. I had a hip done 11 years ago and the other one done last June so I don’t do any running. I have the John Giles Foundation Walk of Dreams on May 7th to raise money for football clubs that need help. I played in the Dublin District Schoolboy League when I was a kid and without them, I wouldn’t have become a professional footballer.
Do you get your five a day?
I’m a bit sceptical about that to be honest. When I was a kid, I’d eat beans, chips and egg. In those days, they were considered useless. When I got older, beans were great. Whatever way I’ve eaten over the years, it has been okay.
Do you worry?
I wouldn’t say I was a worrier; I’d be pretty optimistic. Even if I’m going out golfing and the forecast is bad, I always think the weather will turn up.
What do you do to relax?
Golf is very relaxing and watching nature programmes and documentaries on television. And I love watching the good teams play. It doesn’t stress me out because I don’t have a part to play in it. I like to see the Irish team win but when you are not involved directly, I don’t find any pressure watching it.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
I probably eat chips a bit too much. If I’m not working, I’d watch the matches on Saturday afternoon and have fish and chips after. My weight is okay but I wouldn’t take any credit for that.
The John Giles Foundation Walk of Dreams takes place on May 7th at 20 locations, benefiting local football clubs and other clubs in need.
