IF YOU DO ONE THING THIS WEEK . . . TURN OFF THE ELECTRONIC GADGETS WELL AHEAD OF SLEEP
There are plenty of factors that can interfere with a good night’s kip: illness, stress, indigestion and too much caffeine rank among them. How about adding electronic gadgets to that list?
A poll for the National Sleep Foundation in the US found that 95 per cent of respondents use electronics – and that includes the television – at least a few nights a week in the hour before bed.
Experts behind the study caution that light-emitting screens could interfere with the body’s hormonal sleep cues, and suggest that engaging in activities that involve gadgets at night, such as checking e-mail or surfing the web, could also increase alertness.
“While these technologies are commonplace, it is clear that we have a lot more to learn about the appropriate use and design of this technology to complement good sleep habits, says David Cloud, the chief executive of the National Sleep Foundation.
In the meantime, put the gadgets to sleep so you can too.
