American recording artist Rich Wyman will perform a benefit concert in aid of Muscular Dystrophy of Ireland on July 17th in the Metropole Hotel, Cork, at 8 p.m. The concert will feature music from his latest album, Fatherless Child; Hank Wendel plays support. Tickets from Pro-musica (021) 271659.

The Niamh McHugh Memorial Fund was set up in January 1996 by friends and colleagues of Niamh to help fund the Rutland Street National School in Dublin. The co-educational school has 120 pupils, many from seriously socially disadvantaged areas. The financial assistance has made a significant addition to what can be provided in the school along with boosting the morale of the children, staff and management. Monies raised to date have funded a paired reading programme, and the Niamh McHugh Memorial Library has been established with more than Pounds 2,000 worth of new books. "HOW do you like my art" is the title of the 12th Biannual International Competition organised by the Bulgarian Red Cross Society. The competition is open to children aged five to 15 with physical or mental handicaps. The following categories of work are eligible: paintings, drawings, inlaid and appliqued works and handicrafts. A limit of two entries will be accepted from each child (closing date for entries is September 1st) and participation forms for submissions, which must be sent to Bulgaria, are available from The Youth Department, Irish Cross Society, 16 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Karen Cummins from the Irish Red Cross will host Fun and Safety with the Irish Red Cross for children of all ages on Wednesday, July 16th at 3 p.m. in the Central Library, Ilac Centre, Dublin. Admission free.

DHL Worldwide Express has adopted the Children's Medical and Research Foundation at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin as its official charity. The DHL Challenge is to raise Pounds 2.5 million over four years to refurbish operating theatres in the hospital. This year's main fundraising event will take place in early October in Tucson, Arizona, where participants will undertake to either do a 10-kilometre run, a 100- kilo-metre walk or a 500-kilometre cycle.
