NEW RESEARCH has highlighted the importance of a common language between professionals at executive management level in the Irish healthcare system.

Director of nursing at Cork University Hospital, Mary Boyd, graduated with a PhD in Clinical Governance from Queens University Belfast and believes her research is of practical benefit in a number of areas.

“I discovered we don’t have a common language – medical directors at professor level, CEOs and directors of nursing are all members of executive management boards, but my research shows they speak three different languages – clinical medical language, management governance language and nursing and midwifery quality and patient care language.”

She pointed out that she is just one of a number of people working in the healthcare sector to obtain this PhD, and that doctorate research can benefit the provision of healthcare nationally.
