Which living person do you most admire and why?
My wife - our twins don't sleep.
What do you regard as the top three problems facing Ireland's health system?
Insufficient funding, inadequate step-down facilities and faceless bureaucracy.
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Grant Hackett, Michael Phelps (both Olympians), Tony O'Reilly (Snr), and my friend Willie Costello.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
At the moment it would be as many hours of uninterrupted sleep as I could get.
What trait do you most value in your friends?
Honesty.
What is your most unhealthy habit?
Biscuits and chocolate.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Buying suits I don't need.
How do you relax?
Swim. I don't swim as much as I would like.
I would like to swim three times a week, but these days if I get to swim once or twice that is a successful week.
Do you use alternative/complementary medicines or therapies?
I don't use them personally, but I find that many of my patients do, and I have no problems with them.
What is your earliest memory?
I think my first memory was my first swim, aged nearly three years old.
What talent would you most like to have?
I would love to have my brother's business acumen.
What is your most treasured possession?
My children.
If not medicine, which other career might you have chosen?
Being an airline pilot always held an appeal for me.

Star of the Seaby Joe O'Connor and The Life of Piby Yann Martel.
