The Chairman of the Police Authority for Northern Ireland last night said he would not be resigning in a dispute over a review of the RUC.

Mr David Cook rejected criticism by unnamed members of the authority said to be demanding his resignation.

Mr Cook and his Police Authority colleague, Mr Chris Ryder, are facing a vote of no confidence at an authority meeting this week, according to the Sunday Life newspaper. It quoted anonymous Police Authority members as saying that, unless Mr Cook and Mr Ryder quit, there may be resignations.

The newspaper said some authority members are concerned at the handling of controversial issues, including the flying of the Union flag at police stations and the oath taken by RUC officers. Mr Ryder is facing censure for describing the Police Authority as "a performing poodle".
