Soils in the Hawaiian rainforests should be depleted by persistent and heavy rains but new research published in the current issue of Nature shows that these highly weathered soils receive nutrients literally from the air. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are supplied in marine aerosols and phosphorus is carried on the winds as dust which originates in central Asia, over 6,000 km away.
