Harrington opts for an Open plan

Padraig Harrington was unable to ignite his A-game on the final day of the European Open at the K-Club today.

Padraig Harrington was unable to ignite his A-game on the final day of the European Open at the K-Club today.

Instead he signed for an uneventful level par 72 and will now focus his energy towards the Open at Royal St George's in a fortnight.

"I'm not disappointed, I'm still confident where my game is at right now," said Harrington, who finished the tournament on three over. "It just happens to be one of those weeks. You can't play well all the time," he added.

"Now it's time to get ready for the Open, work on my game, whatever needs to be done. There's no element of my game that I'm absolutely happy with at the moment so I will apply myself over the next 10 days."

Harrington is bypassing next week's play at Loch Lomond to practice some links golf in Ireland during the week.

"I'll play links courses three or four times before I head over for the Open next Sunday," he explained. "I'll probably go down and play the European Club, I would also like to play Portmarnock but haven't made any plans for there yet."

On the coaching front, the Dubliner has been working with Bob Torrance at the K-Club all week. But that will be the end of the Scots advice until they hook up again at the Open.

Harrington was unable to pin-point a specific reason for his mediocre performance but did suggest a bad putting performance on the first day was probably the catalyst. Yet he is almost thankful the lull came at this juncture as there is now time to sharpen up in time.

"I'd rather have it happen this week rather than two week's time. A week like this always shows up what you need to work on, so in that sense it's a good time for it to happen," he concluded.

Of the other early Irish starters, K Club touring pro Paul McGinley faired the best by returning a level par 72 to finish one under for the tournament. Damien McGrane closed with a one over 73 and dropped back to three over.

It was a disappointing finish for Graeme McDowell, whose 76 left him on three over. Afterwards the Ulster man talked of his plans in the run up to the Open.

"I'll take tomorrow off before heading over to Loch Lomond. That's how I plan to qualify for the Open by finishing in the top seven. If I don't achieve that then the last resort is to go to the qualifying."
