A Sri Lankan man who was charged with "persistently" harassing two Galway women told Galway District Court yesterday that he could not get a solicitor to represent him and he wanted the case transferred to Dublin.
Mr Selliah Ramachchandran (43), with an address at Orpen Close, Stillorgan Grove, Blackrock, Co Dublin, said he would need a month to study the book of evidence, which was served on him in the court.
The accused is charged with harassing one of the women by persistently following and pestering her at Dominick Street, Galway, on June 23rd, 1997, contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
He is further charged with harassing both women on various dates in May, June and July last year by sending them letters. One of the letters contained a poem, and on another occasion a book entitled Criminals was enclosed.
Judge John Garavan advised the accused to consult a solicitor, and said the Law Society would supply him with a list of solicitors in Galway who would take his case. He remanded the accused on continuing bail to appear before the court again on June 24th.
