A drug addict robbed an Italian tourist of her handbag and then ran over her husband, Kilmainham District Court has been told. James Nolan (21), of Bridgefoot Street, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to robbing Ms Philippa Nocalai of her handbag at Usher's Quay on August 20th last, and to being a passenger in a stolen Volvo the same day.
Garda Richard Millea described how Nolan came up behind the Italian tourist as she was returning to her hired car. He grabbed her handbag and there was a struggle, during which she fell to the ground. Mr Nolan then jumped into the stolen Volvo with her bag.
Her husband Mario heard her screams and saw what had happened. He jumped in front of the car to stop it, but it drove straight over him.
Judge Murrough Connellan sentenced Nolan to nine months each on the two charges, the sentences to run concurrently.
