A 41-gun salute was heard at Hillsborough Castle in Belfast today as a mark of respect to the Queen Mother who died on Saturday.

The salute, of guns firing at intervals of approximately once a minute for 40 minutes, took place in cities across Britain and Gibraltar as well as in Belfast at midday.

The salute was fired at: Hyde Park, London; The Tower of London; Firepower Museum, Woolwich; Edinburgh Castle; Stirling Castle; City Hall, Cardiff; Belfast; Aldershot; Dover Castle; Royal Citadel, Plymouth; York; Gibraltar.

Among the Northern church leaders and politicians who have paid tribute to the Queen Mother are the Rev Harold of the Methodist Church in Ireland; Presbyterian Church general secretary, Dr Sam Hutchinson; the Anglican Primate of Ireland, Archbishop Robin Eames; and the Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid.

Meanwhile Northern Ireland First Minister Mr David Trimble and Deputy First Minister Mr Mark Durkan said of the Queen Mother: "Her personal contribution to ordinary people and many charitable organisations was immense especially during and follow the events of the Second World War."

A book of condolence will also be opened at the Hillsborough Castle on Wednesday.
