A gunman opened fire at a North Carolina nursing home today, killing six people and wounding five others, police said.
The gunman was also injured before he was apprehended by police after the rampage at Pinelake Health and Rehab in the town of Carthage this mornimg.
Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie told television stations WRAL in Raleigh and WTVD in Durham that a police officer was also among the injured.
Gretchen Kelly, spokeswoman at Moore Regional Hospital, said six people were brought to the hospital from the nursing home about 60 miles south-west of Raleigh, but she would not release further details on their injuries or conditions. It also was not clear if any of those brought to the hospital were among the dead.
McKenzie said the man was not a patient at the nursing home but didn’t offer further details on what the gunman’s motive might have been.
A nursing home website said the facility that opened in 1993 has 90 beds, including 20 for those with Alzheimer’s disease.
