Guilty plea to manslaughter

A TIPPERARY man who was due to go on trial for a murder in Waterford two years ago has admitted to the killing.

A TIPPERARY man who was due to go on trial for a murder in Waterford two years ago has admitted to the killing.

Robert Devine (33), Wheatfields, Clonmel, pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty of the manslaughter of Joseph Cummins (21) just before the trial was due to get under way yesterday.

At the Central Criminal Court, Tim O’Leary SC, prosecuting, told the court that the new plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Cummins, who was from Waterford city but had moved to Tramore, Co Waterford, with his parents, was stabbed several times during an incident at a rented property.

Mr Justice Barry White remanded Devine in custody until January 25th for sentencing.
