The integration of guidance counselling into the educational system and the labour market is a challenge facing professional counsellors, according to the Minister for Education. Guidance and counselling were seen in the past as "services to by added on to existing provision", Ms Breathnach told about 200 delegates at the 44th annual conference of the International Association for Educational and Vocational Guidance at UCD yesterday.
"Achieving integration of the guidance counselling service into the educational system and the labour market will be a challenge for you as you approach the 21st century," she said.
