WOODY is a lasso wielding wooden cowboy and boy has he got some trouble on his hands! He is, or at least has been, six year old Andy's favourite toy holding a place of honour on Andy's bed. But Andy's birthday party is about to change all that.
Birthdays mean presents and presents means toys so Woody's place at the top of Andy's toy world is in jeopardy.
Unfortunately for Woody Andy's new toy does seem to be rather special. His name is Buzz Lightyear and he is a super powered, karate chopping, laser blasting, space hero action figure. Worse still, he appears to be a big hit with Andy.
Sure enough, Woody regards Buzz as a threat to his supremacy but after accidentally pushing him out the bedroom window he is left with no option but to rescue him and get the two of them back to Andy's room.
The game begins just before Buzz's arrival and takes you on a helter skelter ride through 19 levels of fantasy on this 32 meg cart. You control Woody as he and the other toys in Andy's world come to life and become involved in a series of comic misadventures.
You can't help but be impressed by the graphics and actions of the characters. For a Mega Drive game, they are nothing short of exceptional they are as smooth as one is likely to see. Remember, the SNES and the Mega Drive in particular are supposed to be old hat but if they keep producing games like this their lives are far from over.
Besides the excellent graphics, there is also some fairly impressive game play. No two levels are quite the same. To make comparisons with other games is a little difficult but Toy Story appears to have taken snippets from some of the best games around and turned them into something a little different.
For instance you can see pieces of Super Mario World, Micro Machines, Mario Kart, Doom and even tiny parts of Lemmings depending on what level you are on.
TOY Story as you will have guessed, is an adaptation from the film and it makes the transition with ease. The film buffs say Toy Story is a great movie and there is no reason why its console counter part shouldn't receive similar praise.
