The members voted by a large majority to change the party's constitution Green party will chose its first ever leader after at a special meeting in Dublin today.
Mr Trevor Sargent TD is considered to be the frontrunner for the job after his Dáilcolleague Mr John Gormley indicated he was not interested in the job.
Explaining the change of strategy, Mr Sargent said the party needed somebody trusted by members to articulate its policies.
