The Green Party's finance spokesman has called for the immediate resignation of Irish Nationwide chief executive Michael Fingleton.
It emerged last week that Mr Fingleton was paid a bonus of €1 million just weeks after the Government introduced the €440 billion guarantee to protect the entire banking system.
The Department of Finance is putting pressure on Mr Fingleton to repay the bonus.
Green Party finance spokesman Dan Boyle said the Irish Nationwide chief executive's conduct was a "disgrace" and that his failure to hand back the bonus payments showed "contempt for all Irish citizens".
"His conduct shows little care for savers and homeowners who have placed considerable faith - and in some cases placed their life's chances and the fortunes of their families - in that institution," Mr Boyle said.
"A week has gone by since we learned that Mr Fingleton was the only bank boss to receive a payrise last year - bringing his salary to €1 million in spite of Irish taxpayers now being exposed to the tune of hundreds of billions to underwite reckless banks."
The Department of Finance is assessing a response from Irish Nationwide to its request that Mr Fingleton repay the €1 million bonus.
The department received a reply from Irish Nationwide last week which said the response was “being considered” and that the issues “would be looked at”.
