GREENPEACE Ireland has asked the Minister for the Environment to commission a special report into the pollution of Nenagh's water supply last month. The organisation says the recently published Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report on the incident was "inconclusive, incomplete and totally inadequate".
"This (the EPA) report does little to allay the fears of the Ok of Nenagh about the future of their water supply," a spokesman for Greenpeace Nenagh, Mr Paddy Mackey, said yesterday.
Hundreds of homes are still without tap water and a drinkable supply will not be restored for another fortnight.
The EPA is to take legal action against Procter & Gamble over the pollution incident. The EPA report also named the Tubex factory and Shannon Development (SFADCo), which is responsible for drainage pipes near the contaminated Gortlandroe well. The report recommends that Nenagh Urban District Council should consider separate legal action against Tubex and SFADCo. It again also noted that the council may have contributed to the contamination through the town sewer, which is linked to the SFADCo system.
