Norwich - The executive director of Greenpeace UK, Lord Melchett, was yesterday in custody after being refused bail by a stipendiary magistrate.
Lord Melchett (51) was one of 28 Greenpeace activists arrested at a field of genetically modified maize at Lyng, near Norwich, Norfolk, at dawn on Monday. About half of the six-acre crop, which was planted as part of the government's genetic testing programme, was cut down with a farm mower, causing an estimated £750 of damage.
