Greenpeace, the environmental protection organisation, has unveiled a car which it claims is almost twice as fuel efficient as ordinary models.
The supercharged two cylinder O.36 litre car was adapted from a Renault Twingo by Swiss engineers commissioned by Greenpeace. It made its first public appearance in Lucerne, Switzerland, yesterday.
The Twingo SmILE Small, Intelligent, Light, Efficient has a fuel consumption of between 3.26 and 3.75 litres per loo km, almost 50 per cent less than the 6.7 litres per loo km of the original Renault model. Greenpeace's International Director, Mr Thilo Bode, said the car proved that the car industry had failed to make fuel efficiency a priority and accused it of blocking feasible technology which would help prevent climate change.
