A GROUP calling itself Greens Against Nama says it will campaign against the National Asset Management Agency (Nama)ahead of the Green Party’s special convention on Saturday.

Spokesman Pat Fitzpatrick said if the party backed Nama it would send out a message to other political parties, as well as banks, that Green principles were easily bought. “The property bubble was of Fianna Fáil’s making and if we accept Nama, we the Greens will be creating another bigger mess. It’s the last throw of a defunct regime,” he said.

“The great work done in building up a very special political party is about to be extinguished with one big, disastrous, costly deal: Nama.”

A spokesman for the Green Party said the party understood some members had concerns about Nama. He said that was why a process of internal dialogue had been established. “And that’s why we’ve been working non-stop with our partners in Government to amend and improve the provisions around Nama,” he added.

At the convention on Saturday, a two-thirds majority will be required to approve the new programme for government, otherwise the Greens may be forced to resign from the Coalition.
