A Waterford schoolteacher, Mr Ben Nutty, will contest the European Parliament elections for the Green Party in June.
Mr Nutty (27) is a former secretary of the Green Party's organisation in Dublin North Dail constituency, where Mr Trevor Sargent TD has a seat.
In the four-seat constituency of Munster he will face the outgoing Fianna Fail MEPs for the constituency, Mr Brian Crowley, who topped the poll in the last election, and Mr Gerry Collins.
Fine Gael's outgoing MEP is Mr John Cushnahan. The Progressive Democrats have yet to select a candidate to contest this year's election.
Their former leader, Mr Des O'Malley, was beaten to a seat by the Independent and former PD, Mr Pat Cox, at the last elections in 1994.
Ms Paula Desmond will be the Labour Party's candidate, succeeding the late Mr Jim Kemmy, who unsuccessfully contested the last election.
Mr Nutty went through two selection conventions to have his candidacy ratified.
The first convention was contested by a Cork-based councillor, Mr Dan Boyle. Following his appointment as national organiser of the party's local election campaign Cllr Boyle stood down in time for Mr Nutty's candidacy to be ratified unanimously at the second convention.
Mr Boyle polled more than 10,000 votes for the Green Party in the last European election in 1994.
During his campaign Mr Nutty will call for the influence of the euro to be limited, for Ireland not to participate in the Partnership for Peace or the WEU and for a ban on genetically modified foods.
