Greek prosecutors today charged Alexandros Giotopoulos, suspected leader of extremist group November 17, with the murders of a British diplomat and a Greek shipping magnate.

Giotopoulos was formally charged on two counts of premeditated murder for the Athens killings of British military attache Brigadier Stephen Saunders in and Greek shipowner Costas Peratikos three years earlier.

The 53-year-old British military attache was gunned down by two gunmen on a motorcycle as he drove to work at the British embassy in Athens.

Giotopoulos already faces charges of belonging to a criminal organisation and complicity with November 17's acts since 1983, but denies any involvement with the group, named after a student uprising against the military regime that ruled Greece in the 1970s.
