The Grammar School building in College Road, Galway, was purchased by a private buyer for more than £2.5 million this week. A number of environmental groups had campaigned for the corporation to buy the property, but the local authority was massively outbid by more than £1 million for the half-acre site and building. The city-centre site is designated as residential.
The Grammar School, which opened in 1815, was the main Protestant school in Galway until the late 1950s.
