The Government is to begin an intensive bid to boost tourism in Connemara.

The Minister for the Marine Mr Frank Fahey has authorised a £100,000 pilot project in a part of the West of Ireland known as Ceantar na nOilean, and incorporating the tiny off-shore Co Galway isles of Gorumna, Lettermore and Lettermullen.

The area is renowned as one of exceptional natural beauty.

Currently underdeveloped, it is reckoned to have the potential to become one of Ireland's most prestigious holiday destinations, according to Mr Fahey.

He reported today: "The area has been chosen, together with the Mullet Peninsular in neighbouring Co Mayo, for a major bid to develop its marine tourism infrastructure.

"This underdeveloped area could create a sustainable marine and coastal-based tourism product, supported by integrated state investment and harness the energy and enthusiasm of the local community," he said.

The appointed team overseeing the project will aim to maximise the economic potential of the area while keeping its natural beauty.
