A report in today's Irish Timessays the Government has turned the spotlight on its job creation record as another US company confirmed it is to cut jobs.
Gateway ready to axe up to 200 jobs at Dublin plant
|
Gateway said it would cut jobs at its Clonshaugh plant in Dublin as part of a worldwide restructuring in response to flagging sales. Up to 200 workers of its 1,600 workforce could lose their jobs.
The company is the latest in a series of US multinationals to scale back their Irish operations. Intel announced last month it was postponing the expansion of its plant in Leixlip, Co Kildare, and earlier this week Thermo King announced that 260 jobs were to go at its plant in Blanchardstown.
Yesterday the live register figure showed a year-on-year fall of nearly 35,000. The number signing on at the end of December was 141,586, but this did not reflect the 700 redundancies announced by mobile phone manufacturer, Motorola. Its Swords plant is to close next month.
According to the newspaper report the IDA has described recent job losses as "disappointing". A spokesman said "there is always going to be job losses but we expect to create between 12-15,000 jobs this year."
