A six-year-old girl, whose legs were scalded when coffee was spilled over her on a flight from Portugal, has been awarded €6,750 damages against Monarch Airlines, Luton Airport, England.
Ms Samantha Cruess Callaghan, counsel for Shannon Currivan, of Kilbelin Park, Newbridge, Co Kildare, said the accident occurred two years ago as Shannon was returning from a holiday in Portugal.
An air steward, who had been pouring coffee into a cup on a serving platter just above where Shannon had been sitting, had inadvertently spilled the hot drink over her upper legs.
She had been treated on the aircraft and had been met by an ambulance at Dublin Airport and taken directly to Temple Street Children's Hospital where she had been treated.
Judge Catherine Delahunt said every air passenger would have experienced the concern of hot coffee and tea being passed across them in their seats and she was glad to see that liability had been conceded in the case.
Shannon was awarded €6,500 damages and €275 special damages.
