NEW CHARGES have been brought against brothers Mr Patrick Gillane and Mr Kevin Gillane, the husband and brother in law of murder victim Mrs Philomena Gillane, a Co Galway court was told yesterday.
At the same sitting of Gort District Court it was stated that two of Mrs Gillane's brothers had been charged recently with assaulting the two Gillane brothers during an incident at the Gillanes' home in Glenbrack Gort, on June 16th last.
Mr Patrick Gillane (33) was charged yesterday with common assault of Garda William Byrne at Ballinderreen, Co Galway, on May 7th last. He was further charged with unlawfully assaulting Garda Byrne, occasioning him actual bodily harm, and with damaging a Garda car on the same date.
Mr Patrick Gillane, who was previously charged with soliciting two men to murder his wife, was on bail, the court heard. His case in relation to the new charges was adjourned to future sittings of the court and an application to have him bound to the peace was adjourned to the same court on February 14th.
Mr Kevin Gillane (38) yesterday faced additional charges of common assault and assault causing actual bodily harm to Garda Byrne at Ballinderreen on May 7th last. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and opted for a jury trial. His case was adjourned to the February 26th sitting of the district court. Mr Kevin Gillane is due to go on trial in April at Galway Circuit Court on previous charges of assaulting Martin and Patrick Gordon at Glenbrack in June of last year.
Mr Patrick Gordon, of Beechlawn, Caltra, was charged yesterday with common assault of Mr Kevin Gillane at Glenbrack on June 16th while his brother, Martin, of the same address, was charged with common assault of Mr Patrick Gillane on the same occasion. Their cases were adjourned until May 27th.
