Voting began in Gibraltar today in a referendum that aims to challenge plans by Britain to share sovereignty of the disputed Mediterranean territory with Spain.
More than 20,000 residents of the British territory have been asked by the Gibraltar government to vote on whether they agree in principle to joint sovereignty between London and Madrid.
But Britain and Spain insist no deal has been struck yet= and have said they will not officially recognise the outcome of the referendum.
Gibraltar has been a bone of contention between Britain and Spain since it was captured by the British in 1704 and ceded permanently under the treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
