Wholesale prices in Germany fell in July, data published by the Federal Statistics Office today showed.
The wholesale price index (WPI) slipped by 0.1 per cent in July from June and was 0.8 per cent lower than it had been in July 2001.
Excluding oil, the WPI fell by 0.2 per cent month-on-month and by 0.5 per cent year-on-year.
The fall was led by energy and certain foodstuffs. Among the items whose wholesale price declined last month were bananas, which were 23.1 per cent cheaper in July from June and cost 26.2 per cent less than they did a year ago.
Potatoes fell by 18.5 per cent month-on-month and by 7.7 per cent year-on-year, and coffee was down by 8.3 per cent and by 22 per cent, respectively.
By contrast, tomato prices were up 5.8 per cent month-on-month and up by 11.5 per cent year-on-year.
