A German court has acquitted the suspected right-hand man of international guerrilla "Carlos the Jackal" on charges that he took part in three bomb attacks in France.

The court said there was not enough evidence that Johannes Weinrich, already serving a life sentence in Germany for bombing a French cultural centre in Berlin in 1983, participated in three bomb attacks killing six people in France over 20 years ago.

The prosecution had sought another life sentence, while the defence sought an acquittal.

According to the prosecution, Weinrich was a top member of a gang led by Illich Ramirez Sanchez, alias "Carlos", who is serving a life term in France for a string of deadly attacks in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s.
