Germany's federal prosecutor's office said today it had charged a German of Pakistani origin for trying to recruit militants to training camps and for collecting money and equipment for al-Qaeda
Aleem N. (46) had met al-Qaeda officials at the Afghan-Pakistani border region several times over the past four years, handing over several thousand euros and equipment including binoculars and microphones, the prosecution said.
"It was his duty to organise money and military equipment in Germany and to recruit additional members and fighters for the organisation," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
Aleem N., who was arrested in February, was charged with "membership in a foreign terrorist organisation and several offences against foreign trade legislation", the office said.
The accused had undergone explosives training during one trip and had sent several people from Germany to al-Qaeda camps, sometimes providing them with a recommendation letter.
"To recruit new members and supporters, the accused was in possession of a variety of videos showing propaganda, executions and attacks, which he was presenting to other people," the prosecutor's office said.
