Gateway has finished consultations with employee representatives in Ireland over the closure of its Irish and British operations, the company said today.
Commenting on the closures, which will lead to the loss of 900 jobs in Ireland, senior vice president of Gateway International Mr Martin Coles said: "We've learned first-hand through the consultative process how this decision could make a significant impact on many Gateway employees, and we empathise with their concerns.
"However, given the current market conditions and macroeconomic environment, at this time we must make such difficult changes to ensure future growth and profitability for the entire company," he said.
He said the company would focus on the US market for its PCs.
Gateway also said it will close its Cyprus-based office, which covered southeastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
This decision follows closely on the closures of its operations in Spain and The Netherlands and, more recently, in Germany, Sweden and Japan.
Gateway anticipates withdrawal from Ireland and Britain by the end of the year.
