Speeding motorists at 700 accident black spots are being targeted in a road safety clampdown, it was announced today.
Gardaí today published a list of speed enforcement zones in a bid to cut road carnage and save hundreds of lives.
Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy also unveiled eight new mobile speed detection vehicles which will be deployed around the country.
A total of 214 people have been killed in road accidents so far this year, down from 240 this time last year.
Mr Murphy said his focus was on getting the message through to people that changes to their driving behaviour would save lives.
"Where drivers don't change their behaviour we will be there to enforce the law," he said. "We in An Garda Siochána are committed to reducing fatal and serious injuries on our roads and improving road safety.
"We continue to assign considerable resources to deter and apprehend irresponsible drivers who can, and do, kill and injure themselves and others."
The Commissioner said the new high-tech detection vans would give gardaí a more efficient enforcement system, particularly during the hours of darkness and adverse weather conditions.
They will be deployed in the areas listed on a county by county basis on the Garda website

More than 100 black spots have been identified in Donegal and Galway.
"Our objective is not to catch people speeding, we want to stop people speeding," Mr Murphy added. "The vast majority of road traffic collisions, deaths and injuries are preventable."
"We ask people to take some responsibility for their own actions and behaviour. We ask them to slow down and take care on our roads. Where they don't, we make absolutely no apology for adopting a robust approach to enforcing for the law," he said.
