GARDAÍ IN Limerick were last night seeking to locate a teenage boy for questioning about the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old Ukrainian student on the outskirts of the city.

Roman Vysochan died after he was stabbed during a fight at a house in the Carrig Midhe estate in Corbally. Gardaí were alerted to an incident shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday at the entrance to the estate near Westbury in Co Clare.

The Westbury estate lies within the Limerick Garda division and so the incident is being investigated by Limerick gardaí.

The teenager, who was a fifth-year student at nearby St Munchin's College, was pronounced dead on arrival in hospital and a second teenager, who was also hospitalised following the same incident, was last night said to be in a stable condition.

Gardaí believe Mr Vysochan and his friend were attacked during a fight at a house, and that the dead boy collapsed on a footpath along the main road as he tried to escape from his attackers.

A 16-year-old youth from Moyross has been arrested and detained in connection with the incident, and gardaí are now looking for someone they believe may have been an accomplice to the fatal stabbing.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 10.30pm and midnight and who saw anything to contact us and we are especially anxious to hear from taxi drivers who may have been working in the area," said Det Insp Declan Mulcahy.

Search teams yesterday recovered two knives on waste ground in the area which they believe may have been used by the attackers. The knives have been sent for forensic analysis.

State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy conducted a postmortem examination last evening on the body of the boy, who had been living in the Westbury area with his family for a number of years. This confirmed that he died due to a stab wound.

Meanwhile, four people, three men and a woman, are still being detained in relation to an ATM robbery at the Nutgrove Shopping Centre in Rathfarnham last Thursday, after which a substantial sum of money was recovered.

Gardaí are also investigating an assault in Mullingar at 9pm on Saturday night, believed to be related to a feud between two families in the area. The Garda Air Support Unit was called to a house in the Grange Meadow estate after reports of a disturbance.

Meanwhile, in Athlone, the death of a mother of three, Lillie Scanlon, from Clara, Co Offaly, whose body was found in a house on Friday, is still being treated as suspicious. Her body displayed bruising and signs of extensive bleeding. A postmortem examination proved inconclusive on the cause of death, and the death is not currently being treated as a murder investigation.
