Gardaí have today made 14 arrests, ranging in ages from late teens to early 40's, in connection with the murder of Shane Geoghegan in Limerick last year.

A garda spokeswoman said six men and six women were arrested on the south side of Limerick city this morning. They are currently being held at garda stations in the Limerick area and at Ennis, Co Clare.

A seventh woman was later arrested in Dublin and is being detained at Ballymun Garda Station while the seventh man was arrested in the Bansha area of Tipperary and is being held at Cahir Garda Station.

The 14 are being held under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act and Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

Gardaí also recovered a small amount of drugs during the operation.

Mr Geoghegan (28) was shot dead on a Limerick housing estate in the early hours of November 9th by gunmen who mistook him for a gangland criminal they were sent to murder.

He was returning home from watching the Ireland-Canada rugby game at a friend's house in the Kilteragh estate, Dooradoyle, just after 1.30am when his killers struck.

The death of Mr Geoghegan caused widespread shock and led to a crackdown on criminal gangs based in Limerick.
