The Garda authorities in west Cork have said that there are positive developments in the investigation concerning the death two years ago of a French woman, Ms Sophie Toscan du Plantier (38) who was murdered near Goleen at Christmas.
The battered body of the woman led to a major Garda investigation, but so far nobody has been charged with her murder. She was found in the driveway of her holiday home, and hundreds of hours of Garda time were employed in an effort to catch her murderer.
One man has been questioned several times by gardai, and while a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, which is still being examined, there is no sign that a prosecution is imminent.
The French media and Ms Toscan du Plantier's family have criticised the approach of gardai to the investigation, but according to Garda sources in Cork, everything that can be done has been done.
Ms Toscan du Plantier's parents, Mr Georges and Mrs Marguerite Bouniol, are in Cork to attend a special Mass at Goleen today in remembrance of their daughter.
Last year, at a similar commemorative Mass, they called for speedy justice in the case.
She was a popular visitor to the remote west Cork region and was well liked in the area. Her murder provoked an outcry, and local people said it was out of keeping with the ethos of the region, normally a reserved and quiet tourist destination.
It is now understood, according to senior Garda sources in west Cork, that positive developments have emerged and the ongoing contact with the DPP will continue in the effort to bring the murderer to justice.
