A man who was held for questioning for the maximum 12-hour period at Midleton Garda station in Co Cork last Monday in connection with alleged sexual offences against children has been released without charge. A Garda file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The man is thought to be a teacher.

A Garda statement said an investigation into the allegations had been conducted for some weeks by the North Cork Garda Division. It is believed the allegations cover several years and involve children aged between eight and 12.

In a separate investigation, a Cork teacher, who is a member of the GAA, has been questioned recently concerning the alleged sex abuse of a youth.
