A LIMERICK man has been charged with the attempted murder of a 20-year-old man who was critically injured following a shooting in the city earlier this year.
Daniel Phillips from Ballinacurra Weston in Limerick sustained gunshot wounds to his head and chest in an incident last May.
The 20-year-old remains at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where his condition is described as critical but stable.
Yesterday at Limerick District Court Shane Mason, of Seán Heuston Place, Limerick, was charged with the attempted murder of Mr Phillips at St John’s Square in Limerick on May 24th.
The 28-year-old was also charged with assaulting Daniel Phillips causing him serious harm on the same date.
Mr Mason was previously charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life at St John’s Square, Limerick, on May 24th last.
Yesterday his solicitor Sarah Ryan told the court that bail had been refused in respect of the older charges at both the District and High Courts.
Ms Ryan said she was not making any bail application on the new charges, which she added would have to be done at another court.
The solicitor asked Judge Olann Kelleher to extend her client’s legal aid certificate to include the new charges.
Det Garda Fergal Hanrahan of Henry Street Garda station gave evidence of formally charging Mr Mason with the new charges yesterday.
He told the court the accused made no reply to the charges.
A relative of Mr Phillips had to be removed from the court yesterday after he stood up and shouted at the accused.
There were also angry scenes outside the courthouse as Mr Mason was being driven away.
Judge Kelleher remanded Mr Mason in custody to Limerick Prison until August 18th next when he will appear before the same court again via video link.
